Cross-cultural research clearly demonstrates that background, experience and culture can influence perception. For example, there are cultural differences for some visual illusions there are cultural differences in the perception of geometric figures, and cultural differences in the perception of color – to name a few. Your task is to describe an example of how your perceptions are influenced by your personal experiences.

From various successful cross-cultural types of research, it is evident that individuals’ past experiences and cultural backgrounds affect their perception of given issues. The knowledge an individual has been exposed to, especially in the past, influences how one perceives life situations in the future. This is particularly evidenced where the occurrence is known to have caused a memorable positive or negative change to the concerned individuals. In this regard, various experiences have evoked different feelings in me throughout my life, thus affecting my perception of the subjects at hand.

Growing up as a child, I used to love riding cycling so much. I even pressured my parents to get me one, and they did buy me a bicycle as a gift when I passed my lower preliminary exams. One day while on my usually cycling adventures, I got an accident that resulted in a broken knee joint. I nursed this injury for about three months, and this turned out to be an awful experience in my life. While serving the damage, I swore never to ride a bicycle again because I believed that it was the cause of my injury. However, it is important to realize that problems caused by various life experiences might be a result of one’s recklessness.

The accident made me develop a negative mentality towards bicycles, and whenever I tried even to touch it all, I remembered the painful experience. To this day, I am a grown-up person, but I still perceive bicycles to be dangerous objects, and therefore I still cannot manage even to ride one. The pain I experienced from the accident makes me discourage people close to me from riding bicycles because they will expose these people to harm. Finally, the relationship between my experience with bicycles and my insight into them shows the extent to which sensation leads to perception.
