Critically distinguish between the major frames of reference on organizational conflict. Discuss Thomas’s five conflict resolution approaches.

Kenneth Thomas identified four approaches to dealing with conflict and they differ in their level of assertiveness:

  1. People escape the whole conflict by delegating contentious decisions by allowing default decisions and not intending to hurt one’s feelings. This style is called avoiding and is relevant when victory is unachievable.
  2. People discover a solution that will in one way moderately satisfy everyone. This approach is compromising and is useful if the outlay of conflict is advanced than that of trailing ground.
  3. The compliance to meet up the desires of others at one’s own expense of person’s own needs.
  4. People work from a situation of power got from position, rank, proficiency, or persuasive capability. This approach is competitive and is useful in case of emergence.
