Daniel Shays was a rebel leader who tried to defend people’s rights on property and reduce lender power over them. Articles of the Confederation led to the situation in which lenders threaten farmers by denying their right to buy back their property, and the government refused to protect these people. For this reason, farmers led by Daniel Shays surrounded court buildings, blocking them and preventing them from issuing foreclosure orders. Initially, this rebellion failed as most of the farmers were arrested.
I chose this ID because Daniel Shays’s rebellion forces the government to think about a written formalization of the rights and obligations of citizens and the state. The national debate soon led to the creation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Thus, Daniel Shays, who wanted to defend his property rights, launched a series of events that led to the formation of the political foundations of the US.
