According to the needs hierarchy, the personal search for love, belongingness, security, and satisfaction of basic needs are at the core of motivation. These needs stem from a person’s inner requirements and can be attributed to personal motivation. A two-factor theory centers upon learned motivation as a key factor of success. It weighs such factors as achievement and recognition against the outer environment, such as working conditions and intrapersonal environment.

According to this theory, motivation is learned and depends on the surroundings. Expectancy theory draws bridges between learned and personal motivation, considering that inner and outer factors are combined to boost a person’s motivation. Equity theory centers around learned motivation which is considered a response to outer stimuli such as performance rewards. The goal-setting theory sees motivation as a combination of personal abilities and goals with organizational support. In this sense, it can be considered a combination of learned and personal motivation.
