In your opinion, what was the most disturbing thing you read in “Upton Sinclair Hits His Readers in the Stomach” from “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair regarding the safety of the workers? Why?

In your opinion, what was the item of most concern regarding consumer protection? Why? As noted in the editor’s introduction, even though Sinclair’s intent was to call attention to the poor working conditions in food industries, his writings led to the passage of the Pure Food and Drug Act. Why do you think the public’s response was to demand food inspection and cleanliness rather than better conditions for the workers?
