Several similarities can be found in offenses such as hate crime, workplace violence, and stalking. Workplace violence and stalking are often committed by people known to the victims. According to Siegel, 75% of people are stalked by someone they know, with most workplace violence victims knowing their offender. However, the perpetrators of hate crimes are not necessarily known to the victims. Moreover, workplace violence and hate crimes are often at a group of individuals, such as colleagues of the offender working on the same project or a group of people sharing the same traits, for example, immigrants.

The main difference between the discussed interpersonal violent crimes is their root causes. Hate crimes are motivated by the specific traits of an individual or group of persons, while stalkers are driven by their unhealthy fixation on the victims, whereas most offenses committed at the workplace are the result of stress. Stalkers focus their attention on their ex-partners or someone they know and are obsessed with. Meanwhile, for culprits of hate crimes, their victims’ identity is not important as long as they exhibit a specific trait, such as skin color, sexuality, or religion.
