1980s hip-hop female rappers were characterized by diversity, innovation, and influence that solely focused on addressing issues in the society. During this period, social-political music lyrics mainly addressed racism and economic inequality. Female rappers of the 1980s struggled to gain popularity because it was not easy the society to accept them, and the fact that hip hop is considered a male-dominated industry. These female rappers primarily addressed gender and femininity in their music.

For instance, Mc Lyte’s “Lyte as a Rock” addressed women’s strength and power in society. The female rappers of the late 1990s did not struggle that much compared to the early female rappers. The platform was already established and was addressing their femininity in various ways, including male swagger. These female rappers did not focus on social issues compared to the early artists. Still, they portrayed a male swagger and the power of doing what the other gender can do, including Cardi B’s Bodak Yellow song.
