Compare and contrast Divine Command Theory and Natural Law ethics. Which is more suited to universal moral laws in contemporary American society?

The Divine Command Theory and the Natural Law Ethics are often conflated; however, they are quite different from each other in a crucial aspect. Specifically, the Divine Command Theory posits that morality is connected to the will of God and, therefore, is defined by God and His teachings. Therefore, the Divine Command Theory is inherently connected to the religious values and standards, which makes it quite rigid and acceptable mostly by the proponents of the religion in question. In turn, the Natural law Ethics views morality and ethics as universal concepts.

Therefore, while the Natural Law Ethics can be inferred based on an individual’s observations and, therefore, is justifiably homogenous across cultures and religions, the Divine Command Theory is based solely on the provisions of a particular religious doctrine, which makes the specified standards understandable and acceptable only by the members of the identified religious community. In contemporary American society, the Natural Law Ethics seems to be the dominant standard since the U.S. community promotes tolerance for every religion while requiring clear and well-defined standards for ethical behavior. As a result, neutral principles are typically applied to avoid religion-related controversies and complications.
