Compare and contrast an internal standard versus an external standard of care. Provide an example of each type of standard that would be applicable to your area of professional practice.

Standards of care are normally employed to safeguard a consumer. Therefore, health standards of care are applied to protect the consumer of health services, that is the patient. The standards of care are divided into two, the internal standards and the external standards of care. Internal standards are standards that deal with internal affairs of nursing, such as nursing qualification requirements.

Some examples of internal standards of care are nurses’ job descriptions, qualifications, expertise, as well as institutional policies. On the other hand, external standards of care are those standards that influence the nursing profession externally. External standards regulate how the profession should be undertaken without affecting the internal affairs of nursing institutions. Examples of external standards of care include nursing Acts and Nurses professional organizations.
