It seems that “Valor, Agravio y Mujer” is a classic rendition of the issue of mujer vestida de hombre. However, when the action is progressing, Mallén makes the audience doubt the established social relations that are considered natural. She achieves it by the intersection and development of the characters. Leonor – a protagonist – disoriented and abandoned by Don Juan, aims to revenge for her honor. Leonor starts to identify herself as Leonardo in order to become the rival of Juan in the framework of the fight for Estela’s heart, Juan’s new love.

Throughout the plot, Leonor never misses the opportunity to manipulate the deeds of everyone involved. Her intelligent and coherent actions result in the goal she wants to achieve – the characters recognize her as a legitimate wife of Juan. Moreover, in the identity of Leonardo, she wins in this struggle for Estela’s heart. It should be noted that despite the apparent attributes of the classic mujer varonil, the protagonist’s traits in the play defy plenty of principles that serve as a foundation for dramatic conventions in which males dominate.
