The issue of transvestism is raised in both “Amar solo por Victor” and “Valor, Agravio y Mujer”; however, there are some differences. In the former, the role of transvestism is that it stresses the differences between the two types of love that Zayas advocates – pure (feminine) and mercantile (masculine). When Esteban acts like Estefania in relations with Laurela, their love is significant; when Esteban reveals that he is a man, his feelings for Estefania turn to “the love of the body.”

The crucial difference between the mentioned work and “Valor, Agravio y Mujer” is that in this play, a woman starts identifying herself as a man. Moreover, transvestism here seems to have another objective. It is implemented to show that a female is fully capable of dealing with the role of males and even playing it better (when it comes to Leonardo’s success in relations with Estela). Thus, the blurring of gender identity here has a more apparent accent on feminism – that women should be provided with opportunities on an equal basis with males. Despite this distinction, both works are considered notable writings that are nothing less than the origins of modern feminism as they illustrate that there is no reason for the oppression of one gender by another.
