One of the organs having dual innervation is the heart, affected by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The first one releases catecholamines to accelerate the heart rate while the second one uses acetylcholine to slow it. Thus, the sympathetic system prepares the body for stressful situations, and the parasympathetic one is responsible for returning the body to its normal state.
