This answer is concerned with an event when a patient refuses some medical procedures that are critical for his or her health. The problem is further worsened by the fact that the patient’s ability to make rational decisions is influenced by the medical condition. A nurse knows that not providing the treatment will likely lead to severe consequences for the patient, including potential death, and has to decide how to react to the situation. The ethical dilemma here is characterized by a necessity to choose between violating the fundamental right of every person for self-determination and not taking action that can save the life of that individual.

The problem in question can be addressed with the help of the rights ethical theory. This school puts emphasis on the fact that all people, from the time they are born, have a set of basic rights that cannot be taken away from them.
