Choose a leader (e.g., political leader, CEO, activist) and indicate whether they would be thought of as a transformational leader or transactional leader (with details to justify choice). Also, indicate whether they would be thought of as a task-oriented or relationship-oriented leader (again, with details to justify choice). Then, apply the Contingency Theory of Leadership to consider how much situational control the leader has and how this explains the leader’s performance. Is your example consistent with predictions of the Contingency Theory of Leadership?

For the past 5 years, Donald Trump has been in charge of the most powerful nation on the planet. He achieved such a position through playing on controversies and managing to unite a good half of the US behind him.

Regardless of how one feels about his political actions and opinions, many still see him as a prominent leader in the US. He can be classified as a transformational leader – during the 2016 election campaign he managed to outline clear goals for his followers, demonstrated passion through his speeches (many of which were aimed at vulnerable minorities), and made the groups following him to feel empowered and energized.

He is a relationship-oriented leader in that he presented himself as “the man of the people” and engaged in populist actions to further instill loyalty to himself among the populations susceptible to his rhetoric. Contingency theory of leadership, when applied to Trump, demonstrates his ability to adapt his rhetoric to appeal to different groups of people.

At the same time, the lack of long-term consistency made his decisions erratic and turned away the people who saw his actions as incongruent with his words.
