Though China was never colonized, imperialism played out there as well. In the 1800s, imperialism in China began when many outside powers established trade relationships with the Chinese after defeating Great Britain in the Opium Wars. This trade agreement turned out that the great powers such as Europe and Japan used it to acquire influential Chinese cities. In addition, the British free trade policy increased the number of foreign powers to further their commercial and economic interest, weakening China.
