It helps plan and balance the workloads of nurses, reduce burnout, and improve the overall quality of care. Different patients require different amounts of time, however, based on the severity of their needs. In this exercise, calculations must be made for two nurses and a ward clerk attending different numbers of patients in order to determine whether the ward is overstaffed or not. The task is as follows:

  1. One acuity level 1 patient, two acuity level 2 patients, three acuity level 3 patients, and one acuity level 4 patient.
  2. Two acuity level 1 patient, three acuity level 2 patients, 2 acuity level 3 patients, and zero acuity level 4 patients.

Considering that the available working hours per shift are 20 hours a day (8+8+4), the calculations are as follows:

  1. (2.3×1) + (2.9×2) + (3.4×3) + (4.6×1)= 22.9 hours.
  2. (2.3×2) + (2.9×3) + (3.4×2) + (4.6×0) = 20.1 hours.

In neither situation, the hospital is understaffed, as the required times may
exceed the calculations by 10-15%.
