Briefly describe how the therapeutic interventions of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and CBT differ. Briefly discuss when you would use one intervention over the other in working with youth or young adult populations.

In the case of therapeutic interventions, DBT differs from CBT because the former focuses on approaches such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulations, and interpersonal effectiveness. In other words, CBT focuses on thoughts, behaviors, and emotions, whereas DBT focuses on emotions primarily with an emphasis on emotional control through the described measures.

For instance, CBT utilizes cognitive restructuring and behavioral experiments, such as role plays, in order to work on thoughts and behaviors. However, DBT focuses on one’s emotional response to external factors through mindfulness and tolerance. I would use DBT with youth or young adults if they were primarily exhibiting improper emotional responses and reactions without any major input from thoughts or behaviors, whereas I would use CBT if all three components are involved, and reasoning is a plausible measure.
