Briefly describe an experience considered personal in nature because of its effect upon the individual. Considering the sociological imagination defined by Mills, explain how that same experience not only affects the individual but impacts society.

A recent personal event that was witnessed occurred when walking around a shopping mall with an African-American friend. In one of the stores where we walked in together, we separated to find what we need. After checking out at the register, we began to walk towards the exit. At this point, the security guard let me through but stopped my friend and asked to verify the receipt and personal bags. It was a blatant example of racial profiling. My friend felt harassed and was visibly upset afterward.

Based on the concept of sociological imagination, unique experiences may feel personal and isolated to the individual, but in fact, reflect the state of society. The relationships and interactions are defined by social structure. Racial profiling is a longstanding issue in the United States, which seems to arise with a prominent case every few months. The issue is a demonstration of implicit bias, which has plagued the United States since the Civil Rights era. However, such localized events lead to intergroup conflict and trigger discriminatory practices in the long term, which is unhealthy for society.

Although the personal experience was traumatizing for those affected, it is important to consider these patterns of behavior based on racial profiling occur constantly. Only through collective measures can something be changed.
