Pascal was a Roman Catholic who believed that every human soul had two destinations, either in heaven or in hell. He believed that the soul’s destination was based on accepting or rejecting the catholic doctrines. Catholic followers are faced with two alternatives based on whether that doctrine is true or false. If one rejects the church, then there is a finite gain if the church is wrong but misery if the church is right. If one accepts, there is joy if the church is right but a finite loss if the doctrine is wrong. The “live option” and its relation to Wager is how the alternatives are so plausible in his explanation. One can either choose to be either a Catholic or not. Depending on this, one will go to heaven or hell.
