Mitochondrial activity is a major physiological change involved in the growth and development of the muscle system. Since mitochondria generate energy that drives metabolic processes in the body, its muscles’ activity significantly influences the muscle system’s physiological functions. Reduced mitochondrial activity in muscles hastens the aging process because it diminishes the energy required for the growth, repair, and maintenance of muscle tissues. A decline in energy production also limits the cytochrome system’s oxidative ability and clearance of free radicals from the body, leading to an enhanced aging rate.

Sarcopenia is another major physicological change that causes a progressive loss of quality, strength, and mass of the muscle system due to aging. It begins to occur at the age of 65, increasing its progression as one approaches 80 years and beyond, especially among females. Moreover, physically inactive individuals experience muscle loss at a younger age. Epidemiological data show that sarcopenia is a physiological process contributing to a higher risk of fractures and fragile bones among the elderly. Sarcopenia contributes to the aging process by weakening muscles and bones’ strengths in the body, leading to frailty, ill-health, and general weaknesses.
