Hitler’s story, as illustrated and explored by Flanner’s character study, demonstrates how charisma, along with the use of mass media, can grab the hearts of many and play on their fears and grudges in order to build up a political rapport. As Flanner mentioned at the end of her article, anyone with a radio can easily listen to the Fuhrer’s voice and the sound of his march, accompanied by thousands of people saying “Heil Hitler.” This was the beginning of the age of mass media. In the 21st century, the media is all-encompassing and widespread. We have the radio, the television, and the internet, which can be easily used to influence minds and promote controversial ideas. Some of the political leaders that use such propaganda methods, who have strong personalities and radical ideas, include President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin. Although they could not be compared to Hitler in terms of radicalism or threat, they display how the openness and freedom of media can be used for corrupt and self-serving political goals.
