Competency 1: Demonstrate Ethical and Professional Behaviors

The hero of the video is a boy who was taken away from his mother and placed with a new family. In such situations, the social worker’s actions are fundamental, as he serves as a link between the child’s previous and current world.

In the story, the father in the new house shows his prejudice against the child and his fears. Therefore, the social worker should model behavior that demonstrates ethics and professionalism. It is important to have preventive conversations with both the child and his new family to reduce the range of difficulties each may encounter.

Competency 2: Engage Diversity and Difference in Practice

Social work contains various contradictions that need to be resolved in the process of the activity. In Kevin’s case, it is critically necessary to find a personalized approach to abandon preconceptions about children reacting the same way in these circumstances.

The social worker should be genuinely interested in the boy and the different phenomena of his life. He needs to consider the specifics and individuality of each case and be honest. These actions will generate and encourage the child’s desire to become aware of the situation more quickly and to treat it objectively.

Competency 3: Advance Human Rights, Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice

Professionals often play a critical role in facilitating changes in practice to improve fundamental rights situations. One of the main elements displayed in the video is promoting the social rights of children in foster care. It is especially true in the case of Kevin, where his mother is alive, and he realizes that they can be together.

In such situations, the social worker needs to assist in getting not so much material help for the child as psychological help. It is necessary to show that he is protected and safe and has the right to determine his future life.
