Aspects of Type II Diabetes Mellitus

How would you help your African American patient with type II diabetes mellitus to be proactive in their care?

You had told them the renal labs were normal but they have noted the blood sugar and glucose level of their last urinalysis did not fit that profile. How do you respond? Explain how glucose control is heavily influenced by the kidneys. Describe renal function based on the family history. Explain at what stage of renal function are all meds, not just diabetic medications, considered for reduction or eliminated from the therapeutic plan. Discuss the ranges that are tested on a urinalysis and what each one indicates. Explain the side effects of each medication he is on and how each one is metabolized.
