Are these two concepts – patient as customer (i.e., customer experience) and patient as partner (i.e., patient experience) – contradictory or complementary or both?

The two concepts (patient as customer and patient as partner) are complementary to help promote the success of a health facility. The emphasis on patient care has become more and more reliant on the construct of patients as customers and has even merged with it. Gusmano, Maschke, and Solomon argue that nowadays, consumer-driven” health is linked with neo-liberal attempts to highlight the health reform market and underline government regulation and funding.

On the same note, successful health-related syndicates perceive patients as partners. Lerner et al. claim that such goal-oriented businesses endeavor to ensure that the patients involve themselves actively with the specific healthcare services and products they receive. Advocating for a patient-centered health program will boost the likelihood of patients recovering swiftly and make them build confidence in the particular health practitioners deployed in the various health facilities.
