Portuguese explorers traveled to African and Asian lands in order to establish trading relationships. Nations from both parts of the world had different reactions to the newcomers. In Africa, the majority of regions perceived the Portuguese as allies and valuable partners as the latter had a major interest in various materials and foods. It is possible to assume that Africans situated on the Gold Coast viewed the trading relationship with the Portuguese as positive because these peoples possessed large amounts of gold and valuable goods.

They realized that, by monopolizing the trade in some products, they had the ability to establish their own rules and prices. In Asia, similar relations were developed between Portugal and China. However, regions with Muslim rulers did not welcome these travelers the same way as they were suspicious of religious reasons behind these offers to trade.
