Humanity is the set of characteristics that distinguishes humans as being human. These characteristics include the ability to participate in self-directed rational action and to adopt and pursue one’s own goals.
Suppose the worker freely employed his rational capacities to pursue his line of work. According to Kant’s Formula of Ends, people make lawful use of these capacities only when they conduct so that the worker might consent to, for example, by paying an agreed-upon salary.
The documentary Food Chains depicts agricultural laborers in America and their constant battle to earn reasonable money. Each worker picks over 4,000 pounds of tomatoes during one 5 AM to 8 PM shift for about $40. Thus, the annual salary is approximately $13,000, still below the poverty level. Therefore, farmworkers are treated as mere means; their wages should be increased.
