Public health nursing aims to promote healthiness on a population scale, which is important due to the fact that medical workers are mostly focused on targeted solutions. PHN was not always recognized as a separate professional field but as a segment of medical nursing. However, during the mid 19th century, public health nurses were defined as a uniquely specific occupation by Florence Nightingale. It was one of the most historically important moments in the public health nursing field because it allowed integrating the developmental practices for the masses.
Moreover, there were significant alterations in the PHN itself, where community-oriented approaches were implemented. In the late 20th century, PHN professionals realized that the given field must assess all of the factors influencing public health. They built a systematic understanding of how politics, economics, and sanitary activities were critically health-determining elements. It was a major shift from the previous focus of public health nurses because they used to consider and consult solely on medical science.
The third key change was the integration of the Community Participatory Health Promotion Model, which aims to ethnographic factors alongside the community-based ones. The given conceptual knowledge was gradually implemented in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The main idea behind the modification was that public health nurses needed to actively participate in community events. In addition, due to the increase in multiculturalism, the ethnographic concept was required as a categorization tool for ethnic health vulnerabilities. The given contributions are the fundamental components of today’s PHN, thus, their effect is significant.
