If an individual has to choose between regarding the Vietnamese Revolution as a Marxist one or discussing it as more nationalist in its nature, it is rather problematic to decide on this aspect. On the one hand, the West-oriented researchers are inclined to interpret this revolution depending on its trigger and achievements as a nationalist one. Thus, it is possible to assume that the focus was on protecting the interests of the Vietnamese people as a nation until the intervention of foreign forces. As a result, in 1975, it was possible to achieve the positive outcome of this revolution and reunify the country.
On the other hand, the supporters of Marxist views tend to consider this revolution as fully Socialist in its character. The reason is that the Vietnamese Communist Party promoted the idea of Socialist Vietnam in the context of the world communism movement. According to the proponents of this narrative, the Vietnamese Revolution was developed for the purpose of building a national democratic and socialist order in the country. The problem is that it is almost impossible to state that the Vietnamese Revolution was only Marxist or only nationalist in its character and progress because the prevalence of these ideas was typical for different stages of the discussed revolution.
From this perspective, it is possible to assume that the period between 1945 and 1946 in the Vietnamese Revolution was associated with the development of the nationalist movement. Furthermore, the period after 1948 can be viewed as related to the progress of Marxist ideas in the nation. Thus, one should pay attention to the fact that the Vietnamese Revolution started as a nationalist one in order to protect the interests of the urban and bourgeois population of the country. Later, the revolution was transformed into the Marxist one under the impact of Socialist ideas and the foreign intervention of two opposing states: the Soviet Union and the United States.
According to some researchers, the intervention of the Soviet Union and the United States and their conflict greatly contributed to the further expansion of the Marxist views in Vietnam. Thus, the propaganda of Marxist ideas that was initiated by the Vietnamese Communist Party was mainly provoked by the military conflict between the North and South territories of Vietnam. It is possible to focus on the complex character of the Vietnamese Revolution and its consequences observed during the period of 1948-1988. These revolutionary events and outcomes do not allow for discussing this movement as only nationalist or only Marxist because one can conclude that both ideas had a significant impact on the progress of the revolution.
