The Soldier and a Laughing Girl by Vermeer is a poem about an ex-military man sitting in a room with a young woman across the table. He recalls the aftermath of war when he was patriotic in defending his country, but he is disillusioned since men lost their lives, leaving orphans and widows.

The persona is one of the people sitting in the same room with the soldier and has a sad tone. The strongest aspect of the poem is a rhetorical question where the speaker wonders how the soldier will tell the young woman all he has experienced, leaving the audience with the answer. Lastly, the poem should include a regular rhyme scheme to make it flow easily and be predictable to the reader.
