This excerpt is a part of the short story “Apollo” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The author used the setting of the narrator’s house in which the main events take place. The excerpt describes a situation where the storyteller’s mother found out that Raphael, a houseboy, had conjunctivitis and forbade her son to communicate with Raphael. The narration is done at a slow and joyful pace since the narrator describes the long-gone events of his childhood. Some of the subjects presented in the excerpt have a particular symbolic meaning. First, the narrator says that “in the quiet kitchen, our house seemed emptied of life,” which illustrates the feeling of loneliness of the boy. Then, “narrow bed pushed against the wall” indicates that Raphael is forced to stay in his room. Finally, somber shadows cast by the light bulb are a symbol that indicates the feeling of fullness and comfort that the boy experiences being around Raphael.
