Although the biopsychosocial model of health is a useful model of health, it may present possible challenges in implementation. What are the benefits and challenges to using this model of health (mental and physical) in the health and helping professions? How does this model differ from the biomedical model? Use specific examples from your personal and/or professional life.

The biopsychosocial model perceives individuals’ health more broadly, considering internal and external factors in diagnosis and decision-making. It differs from the biomedical one by prioritizing the combination of each patient’s mental, social, and physical causes rather than relying on the pathophysiology and biological aspects of a disease.

It is beneficial to use by healthcare professionals because it enables them to gather more evidence while assessing patients’ mental and physical conditions, yet they might not be relevant to the general diagnosis guidelines.

For instance, patients with obesity tend to worsen their condition because of unique psychical factors and the social environment of their lives. The biopsychosocial model implementation is beneficial for such clients because perceiving overeating as a changeable coping mechanism is more efficient than forced weight-loss treatment.
