After smearing shampoo on the outside lens of a pair of glasses, describe your feelings as you tried to conduct your internet search while wearing the glasses. Were you able to read anything and were you able to complete this in ten minutes (or did you stop because you were too frustrated)? Explain how assistive devices could be used to help a child with vision problems to see better. How would a child be evaluated to determine whether a device is necessary?

After applying shampoo on my glasses and trying to do an internet search on “assistive devices,” the exercise was impossible. The eyeglasses were very unclear and foggy. The computer screen was a blur of letters that did not bring out any particular meaning. I tried to strain, but all was in vain. My eyes started itching and become painful with each passing moment. My optic nerves were also painful under the strain of trying to see through foggy glasses. I was unable to complete the experiment of conducting an internet search under these circumstances and actually gave up in frustration before ten minutes were over. I could not withstand the pain in my eyes, optic nerve, and a growing headache. Adjusting the contrast ratio of the computer made the computer screen a little visible and reduced the pain in my eyes.

Children with vision problems could be assisted through various tools, equipment, and devices to deal with various academic and daily tasks. For example, these children may be offered eyeglasses with special prescriptions that match their needs. Other optical devices that may be used to assist visually impaired children are magnifiers and telescopes. Those children who have a serious case of visual impairment may use a special Braille note-taker that can read back the notes through a speaker to the benefit of the child. Other assistive devices such as talking calculators, voice organizers, talking books, recorded books, cassette tape recorders, and other additional audio devices may be used in assisting visually impaired children in coping with their situation and managing to improve their academic performances.
