According to William James, “I” is both the subject and the object of self-соgnition. Among the three ways of knowing oneself, introspection should be mentioned as the closest mechanism to the one described by William James. In introspection, the cognizable “Me” is the complex of thoughts, feelings, images, and emotions that a person analyzes to understand his or herself.

According to the next way, the cognizable aspect is a person’s behavioral reaction to the outer world. This aspect touches on the surrounding people and situations that affect a personality.

The third way, based on using other people as a means of self-cognition, does not fully coincide with William James’ approach, as the object of knowing oneself shifts from people themselves to the way they are perceived by others.
