“Diary of a Madman” is often considered the most influential short story of Chinese vernacular. It provided a passionate critique of the traditional way of life in an accessible form and through creative metaphors. The short story format is perhaps the best way of communicating such ideas because it allows for focused delivery of ideas without the need for an extended plot. It also allows the author to utilize less traditional protagonists like the vain person in “Man of La Mancha.” The form also allows for easier distribution of the stories because book publishing can often be costly and a gamble.
