c. Acidic rainfall results from the burning of fossil fuels and mainly coal. This leads to the emission of sulfur into the atmosphere in the form of sulfur dioxide (SO2). The SO2 is then oxidized in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4), produced in minute droplets. During rainy seasons, the sulfuric acid formed dissolves in water to form acidic rain. As a result, in this region, when the acidic rain falls to the earth’s surface, it scotches the vegetation. Also, it lowers the PH value of the soil, making the soil more acidic, which affects the survival of soil habitats. For instance, the high concentration of sulfuric acid leads to adverse respiratory problems in human beings. Nonetheless, the sulfuric acid mostly affects the unpopulated areas but still damages the vegetation. Also, acidic rainfall discharges metals from the soil into the lakes and rivers, causing harm to aquatic life.
