A key component to coordinated care is the interoperability of healthcare information systems. What are the top barriers to solving this problem? What are the possible solutions?

A

Interoperability is the capability of different systems to exchange information. In healthcare, an electronic health record (EHR) is a system of documenting and storing patient information that allows providers to use a single computerized framework instead of relying on paper-based files. Nevertheless, the current state of data sharing shows that many hospitals have low interoperability. The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology presents six main barriers to improvements, including technical, financial, administrative, and other problems. The development and optimization of systems require money and rigorous quality checks. Furthermore, since patient data is in need of protection, trust barriers arise in legal and business spheres. Possible solutions for these problems include standardization of all processes to create a model for all technology that will be used in medical facilities. If the government and organizations accept a certain standard, their interoperability will be easily regulated.
